FROM THE EEC TO THE EU

European Economic Community

  • The "European Economic Community" (EEC) was officially established by the Treaty of Rome in 1957, with the objective of integrating the economies of Europe. It then consisted of six member states - Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg, West Germany and the Netherlands. It was also known at the time as the "European Communities" or as the "Common Market" (which comprised the EEC, the "European Coal and Steel Community" (ECSC; dissolved in 2002), and the "European Atomic Energy Community" (Euratom).
  • Spain joined the EEC in 1986.
  • In 1993, when the European Union (EU) was created, the "European communities" blended under the name "European Community" (EC) and joined the EU.
  • In 2009 the EC's institutions dissolved into the European Union by the Treaty of Lisbon.
