A LOOK AT SPAIN BEFORE JOINING THE EU

Can you imagine how Spain was before its adhesion to the EU in 1985?

Spain was a country which didn’t have much population. If we compare the numbers from before and after Spain's adhesion to the EU, we will see that the population has increased very much during these 30 years. There’s a difference of 9 million people. This increase is in part due to immigration but also because the living conditions have improved.

Another important thing is that Spain was the European country with the highest population of smokers. In fact, there were some statistics which showed that more than the 36% of young people were usual smokers. Fortunately, today we can affirm that there’s less than the 30% (of the total Spanish population) that usually smokes. This has happened thanks to anti-smoking campaigns and, mainly, thanks to new anti-smoking laws which forbade smoking in all enclosed spaces (like pubs, restaurants, shops…)promoted by the EU policies.

It should be pointed out that the Erasmus programme (European Region Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students) has been very successful too. The number of students involved has increased considerably. In 1987, only 95 students took part in it but, since then, there have been more than 40.000 students that have left Spain for studying abroad thanks to the Erasmus programme.

These are only some of all the changes in Spain thanks to being in the EU, but there are many more. If you want to know a bit more about it, you should read this (it’s in English too, so don’t worry if the first link is in Spanish):
