1997: NO MORE TESTING ON ANIMALS!

The EU member states decided to sign the Amsterdam Treaty in 1997.

The Amsterdam treaty gave the European Parliament power over different areas, including legislating on immigration, and adopting civil and criminal laws.

But the most important aspect of the Amsterdam Treaty, in terms of animal protection, was the inclusion of a Protocol on animal welfare. It's very important because the Treaty stated that vertebrate animals have feelings and that we need to protect them.

Unfortunately, the protocol left member states free to decide on animal welfare in circuses, equine competitions, greyhound racing, hunting with hounds, and bullfighting.

In Spain there were some laws following these indications, for example a law prohibiting testing cosmetics on animals (1997), but there is still a lot to do to protect the animals in Spain.

  1. Unfortunately, these measures are insufficient. If we ban animal testing in Spain, MNC are going to go somewhere else where it is permitted. We need a global deal to ban it everywhere without any exceptions.
